Creativity is an action, not an outcome!
It’s amazing what can be done through others.
We often look at a creative person through the literal translation of what they have done or what came from their hand or physical being. For example: artwork, stand-up comedy, interior design, and the list can go on.
All of these examples are one person producing an exact outcome. They are creative people. However, creativity can be a journey while you find the people who can help you express yourself.
It’s true that Mickey Mouse was the brainchild of Walt Disney. It’s also true that in the beginning it was he who drew the prototype from his earliest Mickey cartoon, Steam Boat Willie. However, the Mickey Mouse you know and love– ya know the little guy with the big feet and very round head and ears– actually was developed by his team of cartoonists. They found that the rounder Mickey gave the character more appeal to viewers.
The most “creative†people you know, famous or not, used their contacts and connections to discover the people in their lives who give their dreams life. For example, my new book coming out in October, The Brander-In-Chief, is a work that came from my head through my personal experiences. However, the illustrations and cover art are things that took a real creative to generate. This includes all the copyrighters, print layout people, and the company that is binding and printing the book. I certainly do not know how to do all these things myself.
We are starting a new publishing company called Ninth Street Publishing. The name comes from our first office location back in 2002 and reminds us where we came from. I never would have thought it possible to have a publishing company. It’s because we partnered with talented people who know how to carry out the dream–not because I woke up one day and became an expert.
Never doubt your abilities. You can do anything as long as you understand that you need to surround yourself with talented people. These people are often outsiders who can help you. I call them Process Partners. You can learn how to use Process Partners in our upcoming free seminar coming up in October.
